Echocardiogram
What Is an Echocardiogram?
An echocardiogram is a safe, non-invasive imaging test that uses ultrasound technology to produce pictures of your heart. It allows doctors to observe how your heart beats and how effectively it circulates blood.
Why Is an Echocardiogram Performed?
This test helps your doctor evaluate heart valve function, detect signs of heart failure, and identify other cardiac conditions. It’s a valuable tool for spotting problems early, before symptoms become more serious.
What to Expect During the Exam
- The procedure is comfortable and typically lasts between 30 and 60 minutes
- A technician will place a handheld device (called a transducer) on your chest
- Sound waves are used to generate live images of your heart on a monitor
- You might be asked to shift positions or briefly hold your breath for clearer images
Understanding the Findings
The test results reveal how well your heart is functioning. They can uncover issues such as weakened heart muscles, valve disorders or fluid accumulation. Your doctor will go over the results with you and explain any next steps.
